On the Occasion of the 20th Anniversary of Siyaya Arts / NASA Theatre

    London, 10 September 2009

Siyaya is 20 years old TODAY. On this occasion, on this day, we are able to look back at our young history. It is interesting to see where we have been, inspiring to see where we are now and exciting to see where we want to go. But then God knows our destiny. We can only do our best and let God, do the rest. As we celebrate our coming of age, we want to take the opportunity to thank all our families, friends, colleagues, artists, supporters, sponsors, festivals, venues, schools, organisations, institutions and all of you who have been part of our lives in one way or the other. Today we look at the two decades of Siyaya & NASA in retrospect and can’t believe how we have survived the test of time.

Today we find ourselves creating work and playing in away lands, performing in better venues and celebrated festivals, but we will never forget our roots. We shall never forget how growing up in Makokoba, Nguboyenja, Barbourfields, Mzilikazi and other Bulawayo townships have influenced our work and beliefs. From the very days of Makinte to the current Zambezi Express, we have travelled a journey and a half.

Our international exposure started when we first set foot in the United Kingdom 14 years ago at the International Youth Festival in Aberdeen, and we have never looked back playing most of the major festivals such as Glastonbury, WOMAD, Edinburgh Fringe, Llangollen Eisteddfod as well as in mainland European countries of Germany, France, Italy, Belgium and Ireland. Siyaya has also been seen in Zambia, Botswana, South Africa, United Arab Emirates & Ghana. In a way we have always known we belong on the big stage, and the making of the current Zambezi Express, working with all the wonderful artists we work with and the opportunities that lie ahead, set the right direction for us to get on the big stage and further cement the belief Siyaya will survive for lifetimes to come. All over these years we have learnt that the impossible is often the untried. We have tried and sometimes succeeded, but often we have failed, fell, been kicked when we were down, but still we continued to persevere and we have been blessed to meet people who have loved us and picked us up in our times of need. What keeps Siyaya going is our goals. We have changed over the years, but the sparkle in our intentions is as bright as ever, and the love for all arts is even stronger. Our being here today has not been easy, and saying that we struggled and we still struggle a lot will not be an exaggeration. Despite many financial, personnel, general, socioeconomic and logistical huddles, we are still the “last men standing”

We also like to “Big Up” all our former artists, both living and departed who have been part of this big Siyaya/NASA family. For those who have passed on, we shall remember them. When we sing and dance, when we say those lines, when we travel the shores of this crazy, cruel but beautiful world, when we rejoice and celebrate, WE SHALL always remember them. We remember the departed sons and daughters of Siyaya, on this day we remember fondly our founding Director, Mike Sobiko, our fellow artists, Papaya Zulu, Tomara Zulu, Sthe Masuku and others. We also pride ourselves in the living legends of our struggle amongst them William Nyandoro, Bryan Angus, Ramsey Kasawaya, Nicola Wallis, Raisedon Baya, Diane Smith, Clinton McKoy, (just to name a few) and all the people who have made a difference in our lives.

Right now, we know what we want to accomplish and we seem know how to get there. The ultimate goal is to be the best. Whether that’s the best ever, who knows….Thank you all for coming along…. 2009 is our year of “the milestone” and a lot is in store for everyone in December. Take care of one another and God Bless you always. With your support we will never go wrong. Nomakanjani – Siyaya.

  • Zawya Dow Jones says:

My knowledge of world music was at about 2/10, then i saw Siyaya at Taste the World as part of WOMAD Abu Dhabi. I also enjoyed Yosu Ndour from Senegal. These two made the festival for me! bring them back soon. I was uplifted and happy to know such wonderful people live in this world. Now i want to go to Zimbabwe, but I am scared. Now i can safely say i know 8/10 about world music. I love you guys.

  • Anita Scott says:

Bless you for exploding onto the stage with drums ablazin’, marimba’s bouncing and feet stamping. Decked out in your traditional tribal garb and dancing your socks off, you nearly blew us out the back of the hall with your unstoppable wall of voice, drum and dance. Wow! Your energy and infectious smiles fell on fertile ground and had us whooping and keeping rhythm the whole night. You say that in Zimbabwe you sing when you are happy and sing when you are sad, but always with rhythm and feeling. The latest addition to your awesome repertoire is the ‘dual’ between two smart ‘young dudes’, who danced and danced until one fell down ‘dead’. The comic timing of his friend trying to revive him, thankfully successful after many inept attempts, had us roaring with laughter. I haven’t stopped smiling since …..
Bless you all and thank you – I might just have to come back for more in Inkberrow in June.
    Happy days

  • Malcolm says:

We had a simply fabulous evening’s entertainment from Siyaya performing OnkeOse in Ashton under Hill Village Hall last night – their overwhelming energy, enthusiasm and good humour swept us all along on a tidal wave of clapping. We loved the opportunity to talk to the group afterwards – this was quite the best thing that has ever appeared on our tiny village hall stage! Good luck with the rest of the tour and come back soon!
